The first of the triptych of Eulalie narratives in Porch Swing Stories, this is probably the one that steers closest to the middle of the road, indulging neither in the genteelly ribald slapstick of “Eulalie and the Tent Meeting” nor the more Victorian sentimentality of “Eulalie and the New Hat.” The younger Miss McPherson was obviously a woman of many abilities, even if cooking was not among them.
